Transform the old industrial site into an elegant living area of Yangzhou and create an elegant and open neighborhood with industrial memory.
Background of Design
The project is located in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, adjacent to the old city. Its site is where the former Yangzhou Metallurgical Factory was situated and now is in the southeast development zone of Yangzhou city. With the development of the times and the deepened understanding of the sustainable development concept, heavy industry has gradually withdrawn from the stage of history. The urbanization process of Yangzhou is faced with constant expansion and innovation, and the old industrial heritage and memory must be preserved. How to seek balance and progress between the urban memory of the original metallurgical factory and the new residential area is a major test for the design.
The project is located on the former Yangzhou Metallurgical Factory site in the southeast of Yangzhou, which is an important area for the development of Yangzhou. The plot, facing the city, is located in the south of Jiangyang Middle Road and west to Wenfeng Road. The former metallurgical factory covers a wide area and is divided into workshop production area, storage area and logistics area. The designer discovered on site that the buildings in the storage and logistics areas were well preserved, so they decided to maintain them as the main parts of this transformation.
The designed reconstruction focuses on the logistics area of the original metallurgical factory. The area faces Jiangyang Middle Road to the north, and there were currently 5 buildings left. These buildings have been built in different years since the factory was founded in 1958. Based on the principle of dynamic exchange, historical continuation and remodeling and transformation, the project has performed a “scalpel” approach of transformation to each building. The buildings in the original logistics area are isolated courtyards enclosed by walls, but the purpose of reconstruction is to release vitality nodes for the city and play a leading role. From “courtyard” to “garden”, function and space form need to be changed from closed to open, so as to provide carrier more suitable for the modern commercial culture dynamic atmosphere.
Analyzes from the perspective of city to play the linkage role of multi-blocks. Adhere to the dynamic linkage development principle of 1+1>2 to explore the relationship between renovation and city. Create open blocks and cultural fairs as regional popular location, play an active role in the economic zone and promote the overall urban development of Yangzhou.
Site: continuation and development of spiritual context
Based on the genius loci, it shows respect to the cultural context and preserves the city’s back gardens to continue the memory of the past and the old. The original site and cultural elements were preserved, and the walls were removed to create a green and sustainable open space. Old buildings with traditional features and strong sense of the times, such as the giant smokestacks, the auditorium and the moon door, have been remained as symbols and memories of history and culture.
The cultural context has been implanted for cultural translation, and each building has been reconstructed in a reasonable way, so as to extract nutrients from traditional Chinese culture and create characteristic streets such as YIXIANGJIAN and MOON VALLEY to enhance cultural connotation. The five buildings of different ages were reconstructed according to their characteristics, and the point-to-point space and form can improve the fine texture of the buildings.
An Open Life Show Field
At present, the reconstructed Building No.1 and Building No.2 have been opened to the public, and the red brick Building No.2 acts as the sales department. In order to preserve the historical features, Building No.1 adopts the style of black brick design and Building No.2 adopts the style of red brick design.
In the process of construction, the transformation actively protected and retained dawn redwood and phoenix trees. After completion, these trees will become a highlight of the project.
The reconstructed Building No.1 was originally built in 1958. Its design has recycled the dismantled black bricks and adopted particle parametric design elements to create a streaming building surface.
At night, the brick walls turn the building into a transparent box. The design has inherited traditional cultural context while highlighting avant-garde style, demonstrating its web celebrity design attributes. Building No.1 was originally built in 1958. Coincidentally, most of the old brick-laying workers in this reconstruction project are the same age as this building. Over the years, people have witnessed the development of the city, while the buildings have retained the past of the city.
Building No.2, which was originally built in 1965 as a canteen, has two historic chimneys. We reconstructed it as a striking image gateway. The reconstructed Building No.2 is made of red bricks, and these bricks will be subject to copper treatment method to embrace a lot of detail and texture innovations, so as to enhance the texture of the building while maintaining its original features.
The overall design strongly reflects the pursuit of open space and form. The special landmark feeling of the building is enhanced by the elements of large glass and walls that transmit light.
The reconstructed Building No.2 will serve as an industrial museum in the future. Bare metal trusses and rugged red bricks contrast sharply with the cool glass. The black box design with industrial sense reinforces the artistic sense and difference of modern architecture, revealing its past through strong contrast.
Materials and Details
The whole design focuses on several main elements: the preservation of the original site, the artistic fusion of old and new and the historical association of the industrial site. It fully excavates the propeqrties of original buildings and landscape elements, retains the old bricks and red bricks as the main material, deconstructs and reconstructs the old black bricks through particle parameterization, and continues the historical culture through the translation of architectural language.
